A November Appeal from Mayor Gayle
Goliath vs the People of Richmond
Dear Friends,
Tuesday's election is critical to the future of Richmond. Team Richmond (me, Jovanka Beckles and Eduardo Martinez) and our hundreds of volunteers have been working hard for months. As you know, Chevron is spending 3 million dollars in our local election trying to regain the City Council and set us back to when we were known as a "company town."
For decades, Chevron controlled the City Council, and it would like nothing better than to go back to those "good old days." In those times past, the interests of the people of Richmond took a backseat to the interests of the oil giant. In recent years, we have shifted that scenario. As stated in John Geluardi's East Bay Express article: "Since Chevron lost control of the council, the city has flourished with a huge reduction in crime rates, the arrival of new businesses, and the creation of urban renewal projects."
I won all three of my past elections, thanks to your help and without a penny of corporate money. Other progressives, like my colleague Vice Mayor Jovanka Beckles, also won her election without any corporate money. With an empowered community, we have put the interests of the people of Richmond before the interests of Chevron. Chevron is threatened that a low-to-moderate income community, like Richmond, with truly representative elected officials who cannot be bought, is doing so well and improving so much.
That's where things are at right now in Richmond. Our city's transformation needs to continue with people who have backbone and who are trustworthy. Vote Gayle McLaughlin, Jovanka Beckles, and Eduardo Martinez for the 4 year seats for Richmond City Council!
I also urge a vote for Tom Butt for Mayor and Jael Myrick for the 2 year City Council seat.
All eyes are on Richmond. We are setting an example to the entire nation by standing up for ourselves in this epic battle of Goliath vs the People!
If you got your ballot by mail and have yet to mail it in, you can bring your ballot to the 3rd floor of Richmond City Hall (450 Civic Center Plaza) on Monday or Tuesday from 8:30 am to 5 pm. You can also bring your ballot to any precinct on Election Day.
If you don't get your ballot by mail, be sure to come out to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and cast your ballot for continuing a decade of progress!
Sincerely,
Gayle
